Outline explanationThe Yamada Residence is a traditional farmhouse in Nakamura Village, Sennan City near Oguri Kaido (Kumano Kaido), owned by a wealthy family for generations who served as Shoya (village leaders). The main house is a one-story wood building with a partial two-story structure, capped by a hongawara-buki tiled roof. The entrance configuration is a Kirizuma-zukuri, Tsuma iri, where the entry is accessed through one of the gabled sides of the building. This house is organized in a traditional arrangement known as “Kuichigai-mima-dori” (three interlocking rooms). In 2002 (Heisei 14), eight buildings such as Shuoku (main house), Genkantou (entrance building), Daidokorotou (kitchen building), Komegura (rice storehouse), Dozo (storehouse), Omotemon (front gate), Nagayamon (inner gate), Dobei (earthen wall) were registered as cultural sites. The building complex is open to the public on the fourth Sunday of every month (except December) from 10:00 to 16:00. Currently, the rice storehouse is used as a museum of history and folklore, the Doma floor as a concert venue, and the Nagayamon Gate as an exhibition hall. Recently, a third grader who came on a field trip told a docent that the view of Senzai garden from Zashiki tatami room made his daily problems disappear. These words led the owner to realize the importance of preserving this cultural property and continuing to show it to visitors.
