Outline explanation

This is a farmhouse structure located in the center of a village. It was registered as the Akashi family’s residence in 2007 and then passed on to the current owner. The main house was built with a 9.5-ken-long beam and a 5-ken-long crossbeam in 1881. It is a tsushi two-storied wooden architecture featuring an irimoya-styled (hip-and-gable) roof with pan-tiles. Black plaster for the outer wall and a mushiko-mado (latticed window similar to an insect net cage) create a profound effect on the house and, with its large scale, forms a traditional village landscape. The zashiki warehouse was built almost at a right angle to the main building’s south side in 1950 and carries a modern appearance with a series of sliding glass windows on the second floor. This space captures light, shade, and wind and looks over a beautiful garden. It is now intended as a place to learn and pass on traditional Japanese culture such as the tea ceremony, kimono, and etiquette. tsushi: attic-like storeroom made under the ceiling or the roof
