Outline explanation

Gokenya is located at the western end of the Habikino hills in the northwestern part of Tondabayashi City. In the 17th century, a village was formed there as an isolated part of Tsuzuyama Village. In the late Edo era, this house was remodeled into a two-story building in the Taisho era. An okuzashiki (back room) was also added to the western part of the main building during this era. The family ran a brewing business on the premises from the mid-Meiji era to the early Showa era, and some parts of the relatively large brewery remain. The previously used, large sake barrel has been converted into a tearoom. The eight registered tangible cultural properties on the premises reveal the changes in private residential architecture since the late Edo era and showcase the factory’s remains inside the residence.
