Outline explanation

In 1935, Juzo Otsuki built the Otsuki Noh Theatre on the Uemachi plateau as the first Noh theatre in Japan to have chair seating instead of the floor seating that was common at the time. It was one of the few Noh theatres to escape the ravages of war, and the only Noh stage in Osaka to be built in a three-room square. The stage is 5.7m long with a gabled gable and a cypress bark covered roof. The medieval-style stool like decoration between the beams are placed on the four sides of the stage, and the ensemble of the woodwork is of high quality. The old pine tree on the background panel was painted by the Japanese painter Harumei OTSUKA. In 1983 the outter building of the theater was reconstructed in reinforced concrete. The Noh stage itself was carefully dismantled and rebuilt at the occation. The sound reverberation time was set at about one second in consideration of the musical characteristics of Noh, the lighting system was built directly into the ceiling of the stage, and the background of the bridge is a full-scale copy of the largest stone wall of Osaka Castle.
