Outline explanation

The Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1936 on the former site of the Sumitomo family estate. This piece of land was donated to the City of Osaka, along with the famous Keitaku-en garden. The pre-war construction of the museum’s impressively scaled main building blended Western and Japanese design elements. The façade housed entrance and the hall is made a gable of Hongawara-buki which is even higher, and the exhibition room is arranged in the left and right wing corridors. It is based on a smooth, three-layered erected surface with less decoration. In the center hall surrounded by marble columns, two large crystal glass chandeliers are hanged, creating a majestic image. In 2015, the museum gained Registered Tangible Cultural Property status. The museum consists of the main building at the time of establishment and the underground exhibition room newly established in the basement of the front of the museum in 1992.
