Outline explanation

This building, a valuable machiya from the Edo period, is located within the moat town of Sakai, where many cultural properties are located. In the Edo period, it was used as a restaurant shop called “Juhachiya”, but in recent years it is used as a place for the local community under the name “Sakurakan”. From the outside, the large Komayose (bamboo fence at the foot of a machiya) on the ground floor and the Mushikomado (barred openings) windows on the first floor display the appearance of a modern minka. The interior consists of three tatami rooms in a row in the north wing and two more rooms in a row in the south wing, separated by a Toriniwa (floor area between the raised tatami rooms).
