It has been said that Choshinji temple was relocated to the present location in 1603 (Keicho 8). It is a Jodo-sect Buddhism temple which is clearly shown in an old map dating from 1657 (Meireki 3). All of the structures but the main gate were lost to fire during the war. This temple is famous for containing the graves of Yoshida Eiza I and Yoshida Eiza II, the Bunraku puppeteers. The main gate is an Ikken Yakuimon with a kirizuma-style gable roof, facing Matsuyamachi-suji Street to the west. The gate is 3.1 meter wide with fences attached on both sides. Kaerumata is placed as a decorative curved support for the gables and nakazonae (Supports to receive girders), which are carved in a pattern of running streams and flowing clouds. The type of rafter is Hitonoki-shigedaruki (single eave structure with closely-spaced rafters). The design of decorative tiles on the ridge is of fine quality. The tall Yakuimon gate gives a graceful impression of dignity. |
