Outline explanation

This three-storey brick and stone building is the prefectural library in Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, Osaka. It consists of the main building, which is cruciform in plan with a circular roof in the centre, and lateral extensions as right and left wings. The main building, completed in 1904, was designed by Magoichi NOGUCHI and Yutaka HIDAKA, with Kingo TATSUNO as architectural advisor, and was built by the temporary construction department of the Sumitomo head office. The left and right wings of the building were enlarged in 1922, again designed by HIDAKA Yukata and constructed by the Temporary Building Department of the Sumitomo Head Office, and donated by the Sumitomo family. The building was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1974. The building is a neo-classical example of Western architecture.
